I drink a green juice first thing almost every morning. Those of you who have never done this will probably say “Ewwww! No thanks. I will stick to my coffee.” As a reformed coffee-holic, however, believe me when I tell you that this juice will give you a bigger, longer-lasting boost of energy than a cup of coffee ever will. Plus, you won’t get jittery and you won’t get that 3pm rebound headache that sends you running to Starbucks.
Drink your juice within 15 minutes of juicing to get the maximum benefits
I use these greens as my “base greens,” meaning that I have them in my juice every morning and add whatever I feel like I need, or happen to find in the store that looks interesting. Most mornings, especially in the winter when the earth has less bounty, it will just be these three ingredients.
- romaine lettuce - 1 bunch
- celery - 4 stalks
Celery is a great source of vitamins and minerals. Rich in flavanoids which help to protect from certain cancers. Naturally low in calories, celery has a high soluable fiber content which helps keep the digestive track moving. It helps to boost the immune system and your metabolism all while helping the body to maintain a proper PH.
- parsley - handful
Wash your greens thoroughly.
Send them through your juicer.
Drink within 15 minutes of juicing. Unless you're using a cold press juicer, which are great but very expensive, the vitamins and minerals start to degrade soon after juicing. By drinking it within 15 minutes you will get the maximum benefits of the vitamins, minerals and live food enzymes that are so beneficial to your health.
I use an inexpensive Breville juicer which just keeps on ticking. I use it at least once a day. It is reliable and cleans up pretty easily.
I call this “green juice” a PH Balance Juice because all of the components add to the alkalinity of your body. Celery is particularly alkaline as well as being a great anti-inflammatory. Romaine lettuce is rich in minerals and surprisingly, one bunch has more Vitamin C than an orange. Parsley is also rich in antioxidants and a particularly good source of luteolin, a flavonoid that searches out and eradicates free radicals in the body.
No matter what trouble your diet might get into for the rest of the day (french fries anyone?), at least you know you gave your body a good start.
